Automagic login for GNOME: Ubuntu (5.10 / 6.06.1 / 6.10)

I hear many people complain about the “hassle” of having to login to their computers on a regular basis. I don’t mind it at all considering it is a huge security feature and it takes five seconds. However, many people have requested the option to be able to automagically login to GNOME upon boot. Below are the instructions:

(note: This is considered a security risk as it automagically grants access to your personal data to anyone with access to your machine.)

  1. System > Administration > Login Window
  2. Select the “Security” tab
  3. Check “Enable Automatic Login”
  4. Select your username from the drop-down list

At this point you will automagically be logged into your machine upon boot. Again, only do this if you understand the potential risks involved!

I hope this tutorial doesn’t come back and bite me. Requiring a login is vastly more secure.
