That is just hilarious, dude :) I don’t think even the MPAA has the resources to send takedown notices to every single site on the internet.

…even if they do send me one I’m sure you can guess the two word reply they’ll get from me. Numbers are not illegal. I don’t care what they say.

A number is not expressive, therefore
it is not copyrightable. It *was*
    a trade secret, no more.

The problem is that a bogus lawsuit against you still costs you. If you ignore the complaint, they automatically win (a ‘default judgment’); then they can get a court order for you to pay the judgment. So either you fight it then, or you fight it when the complaint comes in. Either way, lawyers are involved, and it will cost you money.

For big companies, this means nothing – lawyer fees are trivial expenses to them. To us, it’s huge (unless you happen to be a lawyer, or really wealthy). Even if we eventually win, we’re out lots of money that we’ll probably never recover. That’s what makes these threats so effective – they know most people just don’t have the resources to take a lawsuit, *especially* one where they (the little people) get no money for winning. It’s a moral victory, which is great, but which doesn’t pay attorney’s fees.

Of course, with over 500K pages now bearing this number, it’s unlikely that any particular person would get hit…
