		<description>Can you just use synaptic and uninstall *everything* and then install Ubuntu Desktop package?  (I mean in one fell swoop, so that it uninstalls all of your packages with dependencies based on a non-pure strain of Ubuntu.)</description>

sudo aptitude remove linux-image-2.6.XXX

match XXX to the previous versions you have lying around (and TAB-completion is your friend!).  Make sure to keep a at least two around though.</description>

Not that things dont work, however, the RC CD installation is much cleaner than the keeping updating the system.
