The free pdf readers are great cause they are fast and lean but sometimes you get a pdf you ahve to print that doesn't render right in anything but the official app, and pdf forms only work in adobe reader too.

A null file loads even faster than the built-in reader, takes up even less space than the built-in reader, never needs updating even through the system update mechanism unlike the built-in reader, and comes with even fewer security risks than the built-in reader. And, incredibly enough, it has absolutely, 100% as much use for displaying quite a number of my PDFs as the built-in reader.

That's why I Googled for "adobe reader ibex", found this site, and installed Adobe Reader 8.1.3.

Now do you get it?

The PDF viewer in Ubuntu blows and is totally unacceptable.

* It does not respond to mouse wheel commands.
* It has the next/previous buttons on the upper left like it is a web browser
* It's rendering engine is weak
* It does not support any sort of interaction with PDF's

Here's my question for linux heads: Why does that piece of crap come with Ubuntu instead of Adobe's completely _free_ reader in the first place?

SCAN forms from the USPS.com web site will not open with any of the regular pre-installed pdf viewers on Ubuntu 8.10. Also the plugin for Firefox 3 on Ubuntu 8.10 will not open those pdf's either. I have found the actual adobe acrobat viewer to be the only thing that will open them. For those of us who conduct business through USPS.com this is an absolute essential piece of information.

What is weird though is that it was working fine with my old version of Ubuntu 6.xx, but when I installed 8.10 it no longer opened the pdf SCAN forms from USPS.com

“Why would you want to install the bloated, horrid mess that is Adobe Reader when Ubuntu comes with a perfectly good PDF-reader built-in? I don’t get it.”

It's not a matter of want, but of necessity. I print shipping labels from the USPS web site, and the only way I know of to make it work is with Adobe Reader. The USPS site won't work with a third party PDF reader. So, for some of us this information is very helpful.

This works great. Just wanted to say that acrobat website does not provide for 64-bit Ubuntu. The tutorial for this site does and it works flawless.

If you seriously have to read, copy text or image from pdf, you can not bypass adobe reader and rely on Evince. Furthermore, Evince has two much rendering problems especially with old pdf... Anyway if you just consult pdf, you still can use Evince without so much problems... In resume, Linux interest is once again mostly virtual... because you have to manage two readers. (KDE Okular is currently under the work).
