Ubuntu 6.06 LTS : Desktop Guide

As per Aarons suggestion a few posts back I ordered the Ubuntu Desktop Guide for the very cheap price of ~$8 (shipped). Apparently they only charge for the price of printing & shipping and make no profit. They also offer a Server Guide, Packaging Guide, Kubuntu and Xubuntu guides plus local editions printed in a… Read More »

Problem Solved

Big wave to the good people over on #amavis.? I managed to finally solve my issue with amavis + spamassassin.? In the near future I will be writing a detailed howto for postfix + spamhaus.org rbl / xbl + amavis-new + clamav + spamassassin. Hopefully this’ll be a help to me (if I ever have… Read More »

homegrown mail server + gmail

I’ve been thinking more and more about spam recently since the whole blue-frog fiasco. I still get piles of spam in my gmail box and I’ve been working on spam filtering for my home mail server. I feel my home mail server is much more spam-resistant than my gmail box, but how can I combine… Read More »

Mail Server Update

Upon request I’ve attached a link to my amavisd.conf.  If anyone can see what I’ve missed I’d appreciate it. What I’m looking for:check for virus (clamav) – worksreject/drop virus messages – workscc virus to postmaster@$mydomain – workscheck for spam (spamassassin) – workscc spam to postmaster@$mydomain – worksrewrite_header Subject ***SPAM*** – BUSTED amavisd.conf

I hate mail servers

I’ve spent the day fighting with my stupid peice of crap mail server (yes, the same I’ve been complaining about for weeks).  Everything is processing fine, its just one little thing that I can’t seem to get working. I’m using postfix + amavis + spamassassin.  The process recognizes spam and sends a notice to [email protected]Read More »

Still having issues with clamd

I’ve done a little continued testing with amavis + clamav and it looks like I’m having a slightly different error now. It seems that after a reboot the /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl file is gone.  For whatever reason it is unable to recreate itself and it times out with “no such file”.  If I ‘touch clamd.ctl’ manually it… Read More »

Debian netinst

Last nite I downloaded the business card CD edition of the Debian stable net-install CD.  I love having an excuse to use those business card CDs! What I like about this (and wonder why Ubuntu doesn’t offer a net-install CD) is 1) its super light.  Anything small enough for a business card CD is impressive… Read More »

Dapper Woes

Tonite I tried yet again to enable wireless networking in Ubuntu Dapper 6.06. I have been using it w/o a hitch since v5.04 but, for whatever reason, it doesn’t work in 6.06. I’ve tried Flight 3, 4, 5, 6, Beta & Beta 2. No luck. I don’t know what they’ve changed but its quite a… Read More »

How to use gaim for gmail chat

In response to my earlier post I wanted to make a how-to publically available for those that aren’t familiar with setting up Jabber. If you have a gmail account you already have an account with Jabber. Gmail’s chat uses the Jabber protocol so you’re already half-way there. (If you don’t have a gmail account you… Read More »

The OSS Advocates & Proprietary IM

I’ve recently been discussing the pros and cons of using the open IM protocol Jabber. I realize that I advocate FOSS in everything else I do. From Ubuntu Linux to OpenOffice, from Gaim to Firefox. Open protocols and open source is what we’re all about.. aren’t we? How many of us use proprietary IM clients?… Read More »
